Sport HistoryRugby Union Read moreRugby Union CloseThe Rugby club at the RGS was founded in 1877 and since that time the game has become the major sport within the school. There have been numerous schoolboy international players over the years and some have even gone on to full honours.Over the past ten years, Ben Simpson (2001), Tom Jokelson (2004) and Fred Burdon (2006) have represented England 16 group, while Kelechi Eseonu (2004), Tom Jokelson (2005), Michael Johnson (2006), William Welch (2008) and Joel Hodgson (2010) have represented England U18’s. William has also represented England at U19 and U20 level and is currently playing in the Newcastle Falcons 1st XV alongside Matt Thompson and Joel who signed for the Falcons in the summer after his exam. Fraser Balmain another member of last season Daily Mail Cup Final squad signed for Leicester Tigers in the summer and has already made his debut in their 1st XV at prop while being only 19 years old. The RGS has been the most successful Northumberland School in the RBS Daily Mail U18 Cup since it began in the early 1990’s. The 1st XV have reached the semi-final of the competition twice in 1992 and 2001, the Quarter-Finals in 2008, and in 1994 and 2010 were runners-up in the final played at Twickenham. The 1st XV are the current Northumberland U18 Cup holder, and have held the trophy for the previous 6 years. |
